Chicago Tribune to cut 80 newsroom jobs

Mirroring the struggles the newspaper industry is experiencing nationwide, The Chicago Tribune announced Tuesday it is laying off 80 people in its newsroom and is reducing the number of pages in the publication. The number laid off is actually 55, since 25 of those jobs were unfilled positions, left over from the last round of layoffs. The Tribune’s sister paper […]

I was right!

But I wish I wasn’t… Chicago Sun-Times columnist Jay Mariotti has signed a multi-year contract extension with the paper. Thought: I guess the Reader Alienation Plan continues at the Sun-Times. Read the Think Tank I wrote last week. Didn’t I tell you? And to think the FCC is ready to bail out the newspaper industry by axing the cross-ownership rules. […]

T Dog’s Think Tank: Can you smell what the mayor is cookin’ ?

Usually, the T Dog Media Blog doesn’t devolve into local politics since this is a media blog (it says that in the name!) and not a political one. But yours truly can’t pass up an opportunity to take this on since it involves the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times. Last Friday, Mayor Richard M. Daley of Chicago blasted the Tribune […]

Support your local TV critic

A vanishing breed in the business nowadays, TV critics are being the odd individuals out in newspaper cutbacks (with an example being the recent departure of Sun-Times critic Doug Elfman.) If this keeps up, we might not have enough critics to participate in the semi-annual TV Critics’ Poll in TV Week… While Hollywood may be happier over this, a local […]

Big Media does it again!

On Tuesday, I had a post up on a story in which Jay Mariotti bashes Cubs fans, and the Sun-Times feedback section below was filled with anti-Mariotti comments. Late Tuesday evening, the feedback section disappeared not only from the Cubs article, but all of Mariotti’s articles (All other articles had their comments section intact.) In today’s Sports TV/Radio column in […]

Tribune puts Newsday up for sale

This moves comes after owner Tribune posted a fourth quarter loss of $78 million. And among the suitors for the Long Island paper include: The publisher of the New York Daily News, Cablevision owner James Dolan (who is destroying the New York Knicks) and News Corp., whose Daily Rupert (a.k.a The Post) publishes rumors as fact.

Sun-Times editor steps down

Editor Cheryl L. Reed (who is African-American) resigns after endorsements regarding Barack Obama and John McCain were rewritten by people outside the newspaper who are “white men”. And on a night before a major election. Coincidence? Or Chicago politics as usual? And before the political hacks start trolling here… oh yeah… that’s right. Yours truly doesn’t talk about Chicago politics. […]

Former WCKG host Terry Armour dies

More sad news: Chicago Tribune columnist and former WCKG co-host Terry Armour has died unexpectedly at the too-young age of 46. Armour was rushed to the hospital this afternoon after falling ill. He died a short time later. Armour worked at the Tribune, covering the Bulls’ championship run in the 1990’s and previously co-hosted a midday talk show with Stan […]

A letter to Jay Mariotti

Usually yours truly doesn’t devote a space here to attack someone (yeah, right), but I have to give attention to Jay Mariotti’s latest column from the Daily Onion regarding the death of Chicago Blackhawks owner Bill Wirtz… From: T Dog To: Jay Mariotti, Chicago Sun-Times Dear Moron: Who do YOU THINK YOU ARE when you tell us how to behave? […]

More Mariotti = More crap

The Chicago Daily Onion (a.k.a the Sun-Times) is giving so-called sportswriter Jay Mariotti a blog, of sorts, with “Mariotti 24/7”, asking us if we can handle more Mariotti. Of course the answer is no, but the Daily Onion (yours truly has been banned from commenting on their blogs), tries to force junk on their readers that will drive them away. […]

The incredibly shrinking Chicago Reader

The Chicago Reader, sold recently to Tampa-based Creative Loafing, is cutting the size of its free alternative weekly – and cutting back staff as well – they are asking its drivers to become independent contractors. This comes as the newspaper industry continues to struggle with declining revenues thanks to the move of classified ads to the internet portals like Craigslist, […]

Chicago Tribune weighs in on Big Ten-Comcast war of words

They support a la carte programming (which is no surprise given they are staunch supporters of the FCC’s indecency campaign and the war in Iraq.) Of course, when was the last time The Chicago Tribune Editorial Board’s opinion on anything was revelant to anybody? Aren’t newspapers supposed to be dead by now? And since yours truly didn’t go to a […]

Tribune to do dirty work for rival

In a move that has some scratching their heads, the Chicago Tribune has agreed to deliver for its rival, The Chicago Sun-Times (except to newsstands and newsboxes within the city limits) It’s a groundbreaking move for the Daily Onion, who circulation lag behind several papers in town, including The Chicago Tribune, RedEye, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, […]
