Happy anniversary, B-96!

In honor of WBBM-FM’s 25th anniversary as a Contemporary Hit/Top 40 station (which flipped from a downtrodden adult contemporary format on May 3, 1982), we dug up this gem – a commercial that aired shortly after the format was launched (it adopted the “B96” moniker a little bit later…) B96 would be the station that would end the two-decades dominance […]

Who’s in your five?

Interesting notes from Feder’s column today: * The game show Let’s Play Crosswords won’t be done in Chicago after all. After the producers decided to shoot the program without a studio audience, Program Partners’ new syndicated strip will originate in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, daytime soap star Ty Treadway has been tapped as host. * The FreeFM (or FraudFM) slogan at […]

Cablevision to go private

The Dolan family have decided to buy out Cablevision for a bid of $10.6 billion, which founded and currently controls the company. Earlier this week, Cablevision sold off its stakes in FSN New England and FSN Bay Area to Comcast. Cablevision owns the MSG Network and FSN New York as well as the New York Knicks and New York Rangers.

Milt Grant dies

The bold station owner, who purchased WGBO-TV in 1985, passed away Saturday at his home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. In the 1980’s, he founded stations in Dallas (KTXA) and Houston (KTXH), and purchased WDCA in Washington, D.C., but sold them all to Gulf Broadcasting. In 1984, he founded WBFS-TV in Miami, and a year later, he purchased WGBO and WGBS-TV […]

Dow Jones rejects offer from Murdoch

The Bancroft family has rejected an offer from News Corp. to buy The Wall Street Journal. Good. We here in Chicago have seen first hand what Murdoch can do to a newspaper. If he did buy The Wall Street Journal, I know what the front page story would be: “The Bears’ Tank Johnson Gets Down and Dirty in Rap Video.”

iVillage coming to Chicago

iVillage live, the fledging daily first-run strip that airs on the NBC O&O’s, is coming to Chicago to stay. NBC Universal announced today that the show is moving its production facilities from Universal Studios in Orlando to the NBC Tower here in Chicago. The interactive show will join Jerry Springer, Judge Mathis, the new Steve Wilkos show, and possibly Let’s […]

The Sun-Times is a disgrace to Chicago

On a day we have immigration marches across the country and a pending veto by President Bush on the Iraq war expected to go down today, THIS is what the Sun-Times lead with this morning: What utter crap. This paper is turning into a joke with each passing day. The way things are going, they will soon become a local […]

Winter ratings (Updated)

Arbitron released the Winter Chicago radio ratings yesterday. Analysis: * As Robert Feder points out, the stations that benefited the most were the black and Hispanic-targeted stations, taking 5 out of the top 10. WGCI-FM remains No.1 (In other words, don’t write off hip-hop yet.) *Urban AC WVAZ-FM (V103) was a big winner, moving up to fourth place. *Top 40 […]

Bullrun

The Chicago Bulls may not be burning up the ratings nationally like they used to (after all, this is a country that now would rather watch a bunch of cars race around a track all day), but they are a hit locally – Game 4 between the Bulls and the Miami Heat – a game that capped off a sweep […]

Comcast buys out Cablevision

Comcast Corp. has bought out Cablevision’s share in the FSN Bay Area and FSN New England sports nets for $570 million. Comcast will get 60 percent of the stake in FSN Bay Area (with Fox owning the other 40 percent) and 50 percent in FSN New England, giving it full control. FSN Bay Area carries San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose sports teams, […]

Baseball’s hot; NBA, NHL playoffs not

The ratings for Major League Baseball games are up 20 percent on regional cable networks, according to Nielsen, and advertisers are clearly benefiting from the strong start. Some of them, like Fox’s Detroit and Houston’s regional sports networks, are averaging better ratings than the local CW and MyNetworkTV affiliates in prime time. Meanwhile, Fox’s Saturday Game of the Week (which […]

Internet radio bill introduced

Two lawmakers have introduced a bill to reverse the net radio royalty increase fee that goes into effect on May 15. Reps. Don Manzullo (R-Ill.) and Jay Inslee (D-Wash.) introduced the bill in a bi-partisan effort yesterday in order to overturn the Copyright Radio Board’s decision that would increase the rate of royalties per song from .08 in 2006 to […]

E! goes Canadian

Independent station CHCH-TV in Hamilton, Ontario (outside of Toronto) is converting its’ entire programming schedule (sans news and prime-time programming) to E! programming, beginning Sept. 1. This marks the first time that a U.S. cable network is taking over a broadcast station and its’ repeaters in Canada. CHCH owner CanWest has pledged to continue airing Canadian content on the station, […]
